A recent meta-analysis of 72 studies of perioperative music was published in Lancet in August 2015. Playing music before, during, or after surgery signifciantly lowered patients' post-operative pain, anxiety, and pain medicine use and increased patients' satisfaction. Hospital length of stay did not differ. Music was delivered through headphoens or musci pillows and choice or timing of the music did not influence outcomes; however, most music types were soothing in nature (e.g.,instrumental, classical).

COMMENT: Using music to improve quality of life has been known to be successful for a long time but is not commonly used. If you undergo surgery, make it a point to listen to your favorite music; it will make recovery much easier.
